Case Study
Razor Category Expansion – Major Retailer Collaboration
Building a New Product Category From Scratch to Full Market Launch
A major retailer approached one of Tincat’s clients with an opportunity to expand into the competitive personal care category. The brand was strong, but the client had a challenge: all of their existing products were Australian-made, and they had limited experience in razor manufacturing or sourcing from China. They needed a partner who could rapidly build category expertise, identify credible factories, and translate complex manufacturing and supply chain information into clear, actionable guidance. Tincat was brought in to make the expansion possible.
-
The razor industry is technical, specialised, and tightly quality-controlled. Blades require precise material selection, advanced sharpening processes, and consistent assembly — and the client had no background in this category. At the same time, the retailer expected competitive pricing, strong performance, and robust packaging suitable for national in-store distribution. The client needed to enter a brand-new category with confidence, without the risks typically associated with overseas manufacturing or unfamiliar supply chains.
-
Tincat activated its network and conducted a complete end-to-end investigation of the razor supply chain.
We mapped the entire production ecosystem — from steel sourcing and heat-treatment to blade sharpening, assembly-line processes, and final packaging.
We identified and vetted core factories with proven expertise in razors, ensuring both capability and long-term reliability.
Working with the client, we customised an open-market razor design by developing new colourways, soaps, styling elements, and multiple packaging configurations to fit the brand’s aesthetic and performance requirements.
We provided structural packaging guidance to ensure the product met the client’s brand specifications while also surviving store handling and shelf conditions.
Tincat collaborated with both the factory and client to produce over 140 pages of quality assurance documentation, covering safety, compliance, materials, processes, and global standards.
